Hikers rescued
Squamish Search and Rescue helped two hikers-turned-mountain climbers return to safety on Monday, April 18, Squamish RCMP reported.
The two hikers contacted the police to say they were in need of assistance on the Stawamus Chief. The hikers had left from the Chief hikers’ parking lot but then decided to rock climb even though they had no climbing experience or equipment, police said. They continued up a rock face that had ropes to assist them until they reached a ledge. They were unable to move in any direction except back down but did not feel safe in doing so.
The hikers told police they could see the highway and were parallel with the blue walking bridge. They were safely on a ledge approximately 200 metres above the ground and had food, water and suitable clothing, police said.
Search and Rescue was asked to assist with bringing the two hikers to safety. The hikers were not injured, police reported.
Saws stolen
Three saws, including a blue Bosch Jig saw, a yellow and black Dewalt sabre saw and an orange, black and silver Stihl MS260 saw engraved with the owner’s name and serial number 250219869, were stolen in a break-in on Monday, April 18, Squamsih RCMP said.
Police advised the homeowner to lock his garage and take an inventory in case this ever happens again. The matter is still under investigation.
Police did not state where the theft took place.
Motorbike theft
A green 2009 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle, with BC Marker U77621 on it, was stolen from a secure underground parking lot on Main Street between 10 p.m. on April 18 and 4 p.m. on April 19, according to police. A White Yamaha motorcycle was parked beside the Ninja and had ignition lock damage, police said.
RV fire
A motorhome was on fire in the 7-Eleven parking lot at 1901 Garibaldi Way on Wednesday, April 20, police reported.
Squamish Fire Rescue requested the RCMP also come to the location, police said.
Firefighters sprayed water on the front engine of the 1981 motorhome, RCMP said. The RV’s driver said there was a smell of gas in the vehicle prior to stopping at 7-Eleven, according to police. Once stopped, the driver observed flames coming out of the bottom of the engine, police said.
The driver and several 7-Eleven customers grabbed fire extinguishers to help put out the fire before calling the fire department. No one was injured, according to Squamish RCMP. Mechanical issues with the RV were noted, police said.
Truck theft
A black 2009 GMC Sierra 2500, two-door pickup truck was stolen from the parking lot of OK Tire on Industrial Way between April 20 at 4 p.m. and April 21 at 6 p.m., RCMP reported. The pickup truck, with the Saskatchewan licence plate 573INC, had a large black, tidy diesel tank with a pump in the bed, a three-inch dent in the passenger side fender wheel that had been slightly painted over, one headlight that goes on and off in the front passenger side, a chrome bug visor in the front hood and a cream interior with black seat covers, according to Squamish RCMP. The truck had not been recovered as of Monday, and the matter is still under investigation.
Theft from camper
Someone broke into the camper of a grey Chevrolet Silverado while it was parked overnight at the Sandman Hotel on Discovery Way on Friday, April 22, police said. The camper door was pried open, RCMP said. Stolen from the camper was a 14-piece Ping I25 set of golf clubs, pink and purple New Balance women’s running shoes and lime-green New Balance men’s running shoes, according to RCMP. The matter is still under investigation.
