The Squamish man behind the wheel of a vehicle involved in a 2012 fatal accident was sentenced to three and a half years in prison on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Last May in North Vancouver Provincial Court, Ryan Brandon Reece pleed guilty to criminal negligence causing the death of Tanya Lee Boudewyn. He faced charges of impaired driving causing death and causing an accident resulting in death.

On Nov. 1, 2012, Reece was involved in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Government and Depot roads in Brackendale. Reece was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital to be treated for injures. Tanya Lee Boudewyn, a Squamish resident and mother of two children, died as a result of the collision.

Reece had already been found guilty in an unrelated case involving drinking and driving, an incident that occurred on April 8, 2013, according to court documents. At the time, Reece was driving while prohibited, Squamish RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Cumming told The Chief. Reece remained in custody until his latest court appearance.

The Crown had asked the judge to give Reece three to four years and a 10-year driving prohibition. Defence argued for Reece to be handed a two-year sentence and a lesser driving ban.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, in North Vancouver Provincial Court, the judge sentenced Reece to a 3.5-year prison sentence banned him from driving for 10 years and handed Reece a firearm’s prohibition.
