District of Squamish Animal Control officers have deemed a Squamish dog dangerous after it was involved in an altercation with another dog on Cleveland Avenue on Aug. 11.

After the altercation that took place downtown, between a local Mastiff/Pointer X and a Pomeranian visiting from Vancouver, Squamish’s Animal Control put the surviving dog under observation. The investigation ended in late August with the determination the dog is dangerous under the Animal Control Bylaw, according to a statement from the district.

Dangerous dogs must be kept on a short leash, muzzled and “under the immediate care and control of a competent person,” according to the bylaw.

The dog must also be kept confined on its owner’s property and a sign must be posted at the entrance to the property to say a dangerous dog resides there.

Animal control officers make visits to the home and the RCMP are notified of the dog’s status, according to district staff.

There are currently three dangerous dogs in Squamish and their addresses are posted on a list at squamish.ca.

If owners of dangerous dogs do not follow the rules of the bylaw they are subject to fines, and the dogs subject to seizure and impoundment and face fees from $200 - $1,000, according to the district.

Representatives from Squamish’s Animal Control and bylaw enforcement are set to present to council on Oct. 25 to discuss proposals for an off-leash dog area in Squamish, staff said.
