The District of Squamish has a new economic development officer.

Kate Mulligan started in the role this week and was introduced to the public at the Community Development Standing Committee on Tuesday.

Mulligan comes from national tourism marketing company Destination Canada, according to chief administrative officer Linda Glenday.

“She is very familiar with provincial and federal policy as it refers to economic markets,” said Glenday.

Mulligan’s LinkedIn account shows she was manager of global marketing, communications, programs and initiatives with Destination Canada.

She received a certificate in executive management from the Sauder School of Business in 2013, according to LinkedIn.

“I am very, very excited about this challenge ahead,” said Mulligan. “Squamish is seeing really exciting times and I am so honoured to be part of it.”

Mulligan said she moved to Squamish from East Vancouver in August 2015 and has three children.

“We’re all very committed to seeing Squamish be a great, vibrant place to live,” she said. “This is kind of like a dream come true because it has always been a focus for me, my community, and being able to be part of these really exciting times means so much to me.”

The District of Squamish has been without an economic development officer since December 2014.

The role of economic development officer involves working “with the community, local businesses, potential investors, innovative organizations and educational institutions as the principal District promoter and contact for business development,” according to the District’s job description for the position posted in the fall. “You support local employment development through the facilitation, promotion and enhancement of existing economic sectors including industry; and you showcase the attraction of new investment into Squamish.”
