A Squamish man will be serving 511 days of jail time after being sentenced for operating a motor vehicle while disqualified and breaking and entering, according to a representative of B.C.’s criminal justice branch.

Ryan Brandon Reece received his sentence on Sept. 11, said spokesman Dan McLaughlin.

Reece had previously pled guilty to both of those charges on June 29.

The calculation of Reece’s jail term was made after taking into account time that he had already served, McLaughlin said.

His sentence would’ve been two years, less one day, otherwise.

Reece received a stay of proceedings for a charge of possession of property obtained by crime.

A stay of proceedings indicates that the Crown has dropped that particular charge. For serious charges, prosecution may resume within one year of the stay.

However, resuming the prosecution in this case is highly unlikely because the Crown directed this stay as part of a plea bargain.

Alisia Adams, legal counsel to the assistant deputy attorney general, previously told The Chief that “where the Crown directs a stay of proceedings of a count as part of a plea resolution, re-instituting proceedings is not something we would consider. As a result, no trial is expected in relation to this matter.”

With respect to the nature of the driving while prohibited charge, Reece faced this accusation because of a separate, unrelated incident that resulted in a fatality.

“The reason why he was prohibited at the time when he committed the current offences is by virtue of a conviction from 2014 for criminal negligence causing death,” said McLaughlin. “It was a motor vehicle incident.”

In 2014, Reece was given a 3.5-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to criminal negligence in the death of Tanya Lee Boudewyn.

Reece was involved in a two-vehicle crash in 2012 around the intersection of Government and Depot roads in Brackendale.

Boudewyn, a Squamish mother of two, died as a result of the accident. Reece was treated for injuries.

The judge also banned him in 2014 from driving for 10 years and imposed a firearm prohibition.

Reece was also found guilty in an unrelated case involving drinking and driving in 2013.
