Squamish Nation students will celebrate their past on May 2.

Sea to Sky Corridor students are pulling together for the second annual Aboriginal Awareness Day.

On Friday, May 2, the Pala7lhkalh Stélmexw Aboriginal Youth Council will include high school students from Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, Mount Currie and Skatin First Nation at Howe Sound Secondary School. The Pala7lhkalh Stélmexw council is actively engaged in raising awareness about inequality issues in Canada.

In the Sea to Sky region, the youth leaders have a fun-filled day planned for elementary and secondary school students, parents and community members. This year’s theme is Aboriginal sports and culture.
The day begins at 9 a.m. with an opening ceremony, followed by a special performance by Mike James from All Aboriginal Healing and Native Games Program. From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the youth will lead a variety of cultural workshops with elementary students.

In the afternoon, students will be entertained by local drummers and dancers that highlight the St’át’imc and Skwxwú7mesh Nation cultures. The event is open to the public after 5 p.m. with a concession stand and
silent auction.
