A wolf wanders through the Squamish Landfill. The District of Squamish will improve the electric fence around the garbage dump to keep out wolves. The improvements are partly responsible for the increase in tipping fees coming in September.

Some tipping fees at the Squamish Landfill are increasing as of September.

Council approved the increase at its July 21 meeting.

The fee for municipal solid waste, demolition, construction waste, clean wood and yard waste is going up to $120 per tonne from $115.

Wood and yard waste fees will increase to $65 per tonne from $45.

The hikes are to cover increased district expenses including upgrading the landfill’s wildlife fence so that it will deter wolves as well as bears. The district used to have its clean wood and yard waste taken to the Callaghan composting facility in Whistler, but that facility is now full, so the district has to ship the waste further afield to a facility in Pemberton, Richmond or Delta.

The last time tipping fees were increased was March 2014.
