Wind gusts of 60 to 100 kilometres an hour are expected to hit Squamish tonight.

The wind is predicted to start this afternoon and reach warning levels by this evening, according to Environment Canada. Power outages, downed trees and other damage could occur.

Squamish is expected to be among the hardest hit areas by heavy rain. Around 150 millimetres of rain is expected before tomorrow morning. Thunderstorms are likely.

The storm carries energy and moisture from the remnants of Typhoon Songda and is forecast to cross southern Vancouver Island this evening and then move to the South Coast tonight. Rainfall intensity and wind direction and speed can change quickly as the system moves through the region.

The wind will ease by tomorrow morning, according to Environment Canada.

"In the Central Pacific Songda was a typhoon losing strength, but as it gets closer to the B.C. coast and Washington state it looks like this really strong jet is going to force it and move it on shore with very strong, damaging winds and heavy amounts of rain," meteorologist Nicole Karkic said on the Weather Network website.

A high streamflow advisory has been issued by BC River Forecast Centre for Squamish River, Stawamus River, Cheakamus River, Lillooet River and surrounding creeks and tributaries. Rivers are expected to rise rapidly but no major flooding is expected at this time, although minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

The public is warned to stay clear of rivers due to quickly flowing water and potentially unstable riverbanks.

To make matters worse, the Weather Network says trees have already been weakened from heavy rain and leaves could clog storm drains.

Large waves of up to three metres could occur close to the shore near Vancouver, according to the network.
