UPDATED 4X: Parachutist flown to safety, back on the ground

Squamish SAR have rescued man stranded on Stawamus Chief

A parachutist who was stuck on the first peak of the Stawamus Chief has been flown to safety by a Squamish Search and Rescue helicopter crew.

The man appears to be free of any serious injuries.

Landon James, manager with Squamish Search and Rescue, says paramedics are still assessing the parachutist's condition, but he was conscious and speaking when rescuers were with him.

James says the most likely cause of the accident was a bad gust of wind, which pushed the parachutist towards the giant rockface, where he became entangled.

Winds in Squamish reached up to 17 kilometres per hour in the 24 hours leading up to the incident, according to Environment Canada readings.

Search and Rescue flew in, landed above the parachutist and a rescuer rappelled down to the man.

Crews strapped him in and raised him up to the helicopter, which then flew him back down.

Traffic was cleared out of the Sea to Sky Highway in the afternoon in order to make way for the rescue effort.
