I’m writing about Woodfibre LNG’s enviromental review process.
I have been engaged in the Woodfibre LNG process from the start. When the proposal first came to my attention I wanted to learn more, so with the permission of Fortis BC I toured their Eagle Mountain Compressor Station in January 2014.
Then in February 2014 I managed to get a tour of their LNG storage facility at Mt. Hayes Ladysmith.
Both of these tours were very helpful in forming my opinion about the project and I was very thankful to Fortis for arranging both visits.
Since then, however, I have had nothing but frustration with the review process. I am a local amateur field biologist who studies herring spawning activities in Howe Sound, salmon and wildlife. If it moves, crawls, flies or bites you, I know something about it.
They stated no elk in the study area; I showed them otherwise.
They stated no herring spawn in the study area; I showed them seven years of my data saying the opposite was true.
They stated no spawning salmon in Mill Creek; again I pointed out the obvious to them.
I get that proponents want to present information in a form that shines a positive light. The half-truths, the local donations spread around town to sway opinion, again capitalism 101, that is not even surprising to me anymore.
The revelation the Liberal party was receiving money from Woodfibre LNG during the process, however, is the last straw for me. The entire project should be cancelled until a completed review of all parties involved and if Woodfibre LNG still wants to try and make their project go, an entire new review frame work would have to be established.
I ask that any permits or environmental certificates that have been issued be cancelled immediately, and that the project be shelved until an unbiased legal review of the Liberal Party’s receiving of money from these people can be conducted and that a new review framework be established.
