Quest men capture bronze

Kermodes place third, look ahead to hosting nationals

For the second straight season, the Quest University Kermodes men's basketball team are recipients of Pacwest Provincial bronze.

While it may not be the gold they were hoping for, the team's season isn't over as they received a berth at the CCAA Nationals from March 13 to 15 because they are hosting the event.

Quest kicked off the provincials on Thursday (Feb. 27) with a dominant 97-61 over the host Douglas College Royals. Kermodes guard Cartiea French-Toney had excellent overall showing at the tournament opener with 30 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

French-Toney was named the player of the game for his efforts but Quest also got a big game from Mohammed Dadfar, who had a team-high 14 rebounds to go along with 21 points. Quest guard Jose Colorado added 15 points in the victory.

With the win over Douglas, the Kermodes advanced to the semifinal game on Friday (Feb. 28) to take on their arch-rival the VIU Mariners. The first half of the game was close, with VIU holding a 44-41 but the Mariners outscored Quest 26-10 in the third quarter and cruised to a 90-74 win.

Quest's Shedrick Nelson picked up 20 points and was named player of the game in the loss. French-Toney had a team-high 22 points and six rebounds but took 23 shots to get there.

The loss crushed the Kermodes' gold-medal dreams and bumped them to the bronze medal game against the Capilano Blues on Saturday (March 1).

A poor start against the Blues nearly cost Quest the bronze, as the Kermodes fell behind 30-8 just over eight minutes into the game. Quest battled back and only trailed by six at the half, they then took over in the third quarter by outscoring Capilano 27-9 to pick up the 95-77 win.

French-Toney was again named player of the game and did it all for Quest. He scored 26 points, dished out 13 assists, grabbed seven rebounds and picked up five steals in the win. The Kermodes also got solid contributions from Nelson (18 points) and Paul Getz (14 points and six rebounds).

French-Toney was named to the tournament all-star team and was also named to the regular season Pacwest first team all-star team. Colorado and Nelson were named to the regular season second team, while Getz was added to the regular season all-rookie team.

The CCAA Nationals start on March 13, with Quest matching up Ontario's Sheridan Bruins in the first round. Other teams at the tournament include the Langara Falcons, Red Deer Kings, Vanier Cheetahs, Holland Hurricanes, Crandall Chargers and the Concordia Thunder.

The national champion will be crowned on the night of March 15 inside the Quest University gym. For more information on the tournament, visit www.ccaa.ca/men-s-s14848.
