Adam Campbell completed the triple-crown at the Squamish 50 event on Sunday (Aug. 17).

The Victoria resident won the 23-kilometre race in 2012, the 50-mile race in 2013 and capped it off by winning the 50 km race in 2014.

Campbell posted a time of 4:55:08 to win the race and praised the trails of Squamish after his third big win.

“It’s a really hard course, but the overcast weather really helped with things today,” he said. “There is such an amazing community of runners out there today and these are some world-class trails in Squamish.”

Campbell beat out Squamish’s Eric Carter for the win, but Carter was having his personal battle with women’s winner and third place finisher Ellie Greenwood.

Carter edged Greenwood by only three seconds and the pair motivated each other.

“He was two minutes ahead of me at the Mountain of Phlegm, so I was gunning for him,” Greenwood said. “It would have been nice to beat him, but he had a really strong finish.”

Carter said he was aware of Greenwood closing the gap.

“I was sprinting as hard as I could especially at the end,” he said, exhausted at the finish line. “I saw her coming up in the park on the other side of the bridge and we were running neck and neck for a while.”

Squamish runners also had a good day on Sunday’s 23 km race, with locals Silas Wiefelspuett and Brad Schalles placing second and third respectively. Nike-sponsored athlete Mario Mendoza won the race with a time of 1:45:28, with Wiefelspuett three minutes back and Schalles four minutes off.

“Tough race, but awesome community support,” Wiefelspuett said.
