Curlers ready to rock in 2015

Bonspiels, juniors and leagues mark club’s 30th anniversary

Members of the Freeman team sweep away during the Light and Dark mixed bonspiel last year.

It’s cold outside but action is starting to heat up at the Howe Sound Curling Club (HSCC).

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the club and a slew of programs and activities are set to mark that achievement.

Bonspiels are always a big draw for the club, and this winter there are three different tournaments coming to the HSCC. The men’s bonspiel kicks off the 2015 season on Jan. 17 and 18, followed by the mixed bonspiel on Feb. 7 and 8. The master men’s bonspiel closes out the season on Feb. 25.

Also returning for the New Year is the Kid’s Rock junior program. It kicks off on Jan. 7 and features eight sessions on Wednesdays from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Participants must be at least eight years old and the sessions consist of warm-ups, skill practice and game play.

In addition to the bonspiels and junior program, there are men’s league games on Wednesdays, women’s league on Tuesdays, mixed league on Thursdays and a charity league on Mondays.

A brand new social league kicks off on Jan. 23 and runs every Friday night for the following eight weeks. There is also an open house on Friday (Jan. 9) evening for all newcomers to the sport participating in the social league.
