Riders blast off the start line during last year’s Cat Scratch Fever dirt bike race. The newly named Barry Groundwater Memorial race takes over the trails of Cat Lake on Sunday (May 4).

The Cat Scratch Fever dirt biking race is no more, but in its place is a nod to one of the most respected locals in the dirt biking community.

The newly named Barry Groundwater Memorial at Cat Lake makes its debut on Sunday (May 4), honouring the former vice-president of the Squamish Dirt Bike Association (SDBA).

Groundwater, a former Squamish resident, lost his battle with cancer in 2012 and was an important member of the SDBA. The event is the first race of the season for the Pacific North West Motorcycle Association (PNWMA)

Last year’s race saw a total of 131 riders from all over the Pacific Northwest invade the trails of Cat Lake, with Squamish’s Aaron Richardson winning first in the A riders expert division. The only other local to win his category was Cory Leclerc, who placed first in the B division Veteran Amateur 30 to 39 age group.

Interested riders are advised to take Highway 99 to the Cat Lake turnoff and to follow the signs to reach the start line. The event is free to all spectators and it all gets underway on Sunday at 11 a.m.
