Halloween hardwood at Quest U

Men’s, women’s teams open season on Oct. 31
Quest
Quest's Cynthia Lau drives to the hoop in the Pacwest final last year. Lau and her teammates will be honoured with the raising of the provincial championship banner on Friday (Oct. 31).

There will be some slashing on Halloween night at Quest University, but it’s not going to be the type that is usually associated with horror movies.

All the slashing will occur within the sidelines as the Quest Kermodes men’s and women’s basketball teams return to the floor on All Hallows’ Eve (Oct. 31) for a scary battle with archrival Capilano Blues.

Halloween will be a night to remember for the women’s team, as following the team’s game they will raise their 2013-14 Pacwest championship banner. The women’s team was the first-ever Quest squad to win the Pacwest and the team’s achievement will now hang inside the “Kermode Kave.”

Much of that championship team is back for another run including: guards Abbey Piazza, Tessa Needham, Andrea Eidsvik, Natasha Weninger and Shayna Cameron. Returning forwards include: Katrin Sandbichler (playoff MVP), Aimee Johnston, Miriam Baumann and Caci Schlechter.

New talents to the women’s squad include: Kimmy Shahed from Richmond, Alberta’s Jennifer Sutherland and Victoria’s Emily Frame.

The men’s team has re-tooled with five new players hitting the court. Brand new to the squad are: Dallas Searles from Washington State, Vernon’s Liam Wear, Squamish native Ricky Souza, Theo VandenEkart from Washington State and Vancouver’s Henry Stine.

Returning players include: Paul Getz, Mike Powell, Dylan Kular, Noah DeRappard-Yuswack, Mike Zayas-Duran, Justin Tryon, Daniel Hoffman and Connor Heinrichs.

Former Kermode Bryce Froberg has joined the men’s team as an assistant coach.

Last year saw the men’s team pick up a bronze medal at the provincials and then place fifth at the CCAA Nationals, which were hosted at Quest University.

Friday’s opening day kicks off a unique schedule for the teams, which sees them have only three of their first 14 games at home before embarking on a seven game home stand in February to close off the season.

The women tip off at 6 p.m., with the men hitting the court at 8 p.m. For more details on both teams, visit www.questkermodes.ca.
