Don Ross girls finish in top 10

The Don Ross Middle School cross-country team posted strong results at the provincials in Kelowna in early November.

The girls’ team of Teigen Pascual, Sienna Dickson, Ella Batcho, Molly Copeland, Sharon Yang and Maya Biln had a strong race. The team is all Grade 8 students except for Yang, who is in Grade 9, while many of the students from other schools running in the junior category were in Grades 9 and 10.

“The girls ended up running to an eighth-place overall out of 40 girls’ teams,” said coach Greg Day.

Pascual posted the strongest individual result, with an 18th place spot out of roughly 200 competitors.

Sammy Misquitta competed for Don Ross and finished in the middle of the pack for junior boys. Day said the student is new to running and had never considered competing before.

The students qualified for the provincial after the school hosted the zone finals a couple of weeks earlier.

Howe Sound Secondary also sent a couple of runners for the senior events: Paige Fanzone finished 84th out of 223 senior girls, while Luke Parry was 131st out of 222 senior boys.

Squamish Day Run

Registration is now open for next summer’s Squamish Days 8k run. The race will take place on Aug. 6, 2017.

In 2016, the run featured Natasha Wodak, who used the race as a test run before leaving for the Olympics in Brazil.

The 2017 race will again be part of the Lifestages Lower Mainland Race Series, which starts with the Steveston Icebreaker 8k on Jan. 15.

The Squamish Days run has room for 400 to register, and there is an early bird fee until Jan. 1. For info, see www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=13742.

Bantam tourney

Whistler’s Winterhawks ended up in the top nest at this weekend’s eight-team bantam rep tournament in Squamish.

The Whistler team cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Seattle Junior Admirals in the final. At one point, in the middle of the game, Seattle got within a goal, but Whistler restored their margin quickly and built on it, with a couple of third-period goals to capture the championship.

The Winterhawks had cruised through the opening round with wins of 7-1 over Nanaimo, 8-0 over Vancouver and 5-0 over the same Seattle team.

The host Eagles from Squamish managed to play Whistler tight in the semi-final but had trouble generating much offence. Squamish goalkeeper Xavier Charbonneau helped to keep his team within comeback range, especially with his control of rebounds.

With 1:47 left in the third, Squamish’s Austin Cranfield managed to put a rebound through traffic past the Whistler goalie to make the score 3-1. The Eagles then pulled the goalie for the extra attacker, but Whistler added an empty netter with one minute left for a 4-1 win.

In the round robin portion, Squamish lost 7-3 to South Delta but beat Saanich 2-1. The highlight for the Eagles though came against the Seattle Sno-Kings on Saturday afternoon.

They scored an early shorthanded goal to get on the board in the first period and added another before the end of the period. With one second left though, Seattle got a goal back.

In the second, Squamish added goals from Logan O’Sullivan, Tucker Reed and Cranfield to build the lead. In the final period, Ben Thompson added one more to give Squamish the 6-1 win.
