Ian and his wife Deborah moved to Squamish at the end of the seventies to accept his first teaching position at Mamquam Elementary School. This began the start of a wonderful and rewarding thirty-five years both working and raising a family in the Sea to Sky Corridor. During this time, Ian had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of Sea to Sky Sky schools, first as a teacher, then as a vice-principal and principal and finishing up his last three years as the assistant superintendent of schools. All three of their grown children attended school in Squamish graduating from Howe Sound Secondary School. The family was also very involved with the International Program having hosted over 20 young students from around the world.

Over the past three and a half decades, Ian has spent his time volunteering with many youth initiatives both in the community and in the school system. He coached soccer, volleyball, baseball, track and field, basketball and volunteered with Boy Scouts of Canada. Most recently, Ian has been volunteering up at Whistler Olympic Park. Ian is an active member of the Squamish United Church sitting on the board as well as assisting with the new Centrepoint initiative.

Ian recently retired in December of 2013, and is excited about the opportunity of giving back to the community he loves, as a School Trustee. He brings to the position experience, knowledge and a real passion for education. He is looking forward to assisting in the planning of the educational future of our youth.
