A 46 year-old Saanich man faces drug trafficking and weapons charges following a police investigation that started with mail-order weapons.

Saanich police started an investigation in May of this year after conducted-energy weapons, believed to have been purchased online and exported from China, were intercepted.

Police determined the person suspected of importing the devices had a history of drug trafficking and possession charges as well as several weapons offences.

Last week officers from the Saanich Police Department and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team carried out a search of a vehicle and residence and recovered an illegally imported, prohibited weapon, items consistent with drug trafficking, drugs with an estimated street value of $10,000 and several weapons.

The cache of weapons included a medieval mace, crossbow, brass knuckles, batons, switchblades and conducted-energy weapons. All of them are prohibited in Canada.

Randy Smith is being held on three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of possession of weapons contrary to a lifetime firearm and weapon prohibition.
