A Sunday night grass fire at the corner of Esquimalt and Harbour roads, near the Johnson Street Bridge, was quickly controlled by Victoria firefighters.

The Victoria Fire Department was called about 8:30 p.m., said Deputy Chief Dan Atkinson.

He said the fire is not considered suspicious.

“We did do a pretty thorough walkaround in the area and tried to trace the burn patterns back to the point of origin, but we weren’t able to find anything definitive,” Atkinson said. “It’s going to be left as undetermined at this time.”

A discarded cigarette or a piece of broken glass magnifying the sunlight are among the possible causes, he said.

The fire serves as a reminder of how dry conditions can be at this time of year, Atkinson said.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to really be mindful of what they’re doing outside.”
