Matthew White will replace Kathryn Laurin as Victoria Symphony CEO on Oct. 1, marking the first change in leadership at the non-profit organization since 2016.

White, an Ottawa-bred, Victoria-based countertenor who has performed with New York City Opera and Toronto’s Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, comes to the symphony after eight years with Early Music Vancouver, where he served as executive and artistic director.

“We are lucky to have an orchestra of this quality in our city,” White said in a statement Tuesday.

“Although continuing to navigate this pandemic will be a challenge, it’s an opportunity to focus on the organization’s core strengths and to imagine new and exciting ways to pursue our mission within these new constraints . . . [I] am confident that we will find innovative ways to keep our patrons engaged and our musicians busy until we are in a position to be back in the concert hall.”

White has also been instrumental in the foundation of the Vancouver Bach Festival and the Pacific Baroque Series in Victoria.
