One Patricia Bay Highway crash turned into three Tuesday, with a police car one of the casualties.

It began around 10 a.m. when a vehicle left the highway and drove into a ditch near McTavish Road.

Then someone slammed into an unoccupied Sidney/North Saanich RCMP vehicle that had been parked at the scene with its lights flashing as officers dealt with the car in the ditch.

“Everybody’s driving around,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Manseau said. “Somebody coming up the highway obviously wanted to see the car crash and see what was happening and plows into the back of the police car.”

The driver who hit the police vehicle was taken to hospital.

With the area of the collision in the southbound lane shut down, another crash happened in the northbound lane as people slowed to try to see what was going on, Manseau said.

There were no serious injuries.
