Air North’s airfare includes two checked bags of 45 kilograms in total.

Whitehorse, the Yukon capital, has a population of about 26,000. Its rugged scenery and outdoor activities are promoted as attractions for tourists.

Air North will also provide a Victoria-Kelowna flight, starting at $200, including taxes.

The company said the route marks the first direct air connection between Canada’s North and Vancouver Island.

Joe Sparling, Air North president, said Yukoners have wanted such a service for years. “Whether they are attending school, travelling for work or visiting family, this flight is going to make travel to Vancouver Island so much easier for everyone in the Yukon and Canada’s North.”

Air North is hoping to draw tourists to Yukon for cultural and culinary festivals and for the northern lights from late September into April.

Victoria Airport Authority president Geoff Dickson said:. “It’s a great opportunity to bring people from the Yukon to see our city and to open up the North for the residents of Victoria.”

Paul Nursey, Tourism Victoria president and CEO, said the flights will also offer a “great opportunity for Asian travelers who dream to seeing the Northern Lights to add Victoria to their itineraries.”
