Firefighters had to douse a blaze in Vancouver's Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood at a restaurant.

A Mount Pleasant restaurant will be closed for a significant length of time after a devastating fire on the long weekend.

Nirvana, an Indian restaurant at 2313 Main St., was badly damaged by fire on Sunday, July 31, after oil on a stove caught fire around noon, according to the Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS).

"The restaurant will need significant repairs due to the heat and fire damage," VFRS spokesperson Matthew Trudeau tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an email. "The building is being assessed by City of Vancouver engineering for structural concerns."

While the restaurant's suppression system did kick in, the fire was significant, damaging the residence above the restaurant as well.

"The fire extended into the roof and ceiling. Crews removed portions to extinguish the remaining fire and contain the spread," Trudeau adds.

In all, 14 trucks and 38 firefighters had to show up to the two-alarm fire, blocking a section of Main Street in Mount Pleasant while dealing with the blaze.

Trudeau notes that while no civilians were injured, one firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion during the incident.

Nirvana has posted on Instagram that it will be closed due to the fire.
