A new community centre and library complex in Steveston is being planned just east of the existing one.

Council approved the site of the planned facility at its committee meeting on Monday after looking at three different places where it could be located.

The facility is estimated to have a total budget of $93.5 million - $79 million for the building and $14.5 million for 160 stalls of parking, partially underground, partially surface parking. Two other options had costs ranging from $99 million to $140 million.

The building will be between 30,000 and 40,000 square feet in size and will have no impact to the existing tennis facility and Steveston Outdoor Pool.

In total, there will be about 220 parking stalls including the existing ones.

Council was looking at three options for sites for the new facility, including building it where the current one is located and a site further south.

The site chosen by council is next to the educational garden - which will need to be relocated - and has the lowest estimated cost, shortest building duration and the least amount of impact on the existing facility, according to a city staff report to council.

Staff confirmed the current community centre will be torn down eventually – at a cost of $1 million – and the space used for parking.

A new full-time project manager will also be hired to oversee the project.
