New Westminster is staking its place as one of the most expensive places to rent in Canada, according to the latest Rentals.ca national rental report.

New Westminster is among the 10 priciest rental markets in Canada, according to a recent national rental report.

The Rentals.ca report for September shows average rent in New Westminster at $1,953 for a one-bedroom — a 3.8 per cent increase over last month and a 20.1 per cent increase over last year. The average rent for a two-bedroom, meanwhile, came in at $2,212.

Not surprisingly, other Metro Vancouver municipalities also cracked the most expensive list. Vancouver led the way, with $2,574 average for a one-bedroom and $3,694 for a two-bedroom; Burnaby came in third, with $2,146 for a one-bedroom and $2,553 for a two-bedroom.

Demand for rentals in those markets remains high, as the Rentals.ca report shows Burnaby leading the way for popularity, based on online page views per listing. Waterloo, Ont., claimed second spot, while Vancouver ranked third and New Westminster fourth.

The Rentals.ca website currently shows a wide range of price points in New Westminster, with a low of $600 for a private room in a home with multiple bedrooms, up to prices north of $3,000: $3,100 for a two-bedroom condo on Royal Avenue; $3,526 for a three-bedroom on Carnarvon Street; and $3,900 for a three-bedroom home on Debeck Street.
