PHOTOS: Have you 'herd' about these elk? (Update)

Reader sent in photos and asks if this is an elk herd in a field at the St. Joseph Island turnoff on Highway 17

Reader Sharalyn Stubbs sent these photos in to SooToday and asks if this is an elk herd in a field at the St. Joseph Island turnoff on Highway 17.

It was her first time ever seeing the animals there, she noted, and wondered if anyone knew the background of the animals in the area.

The area is also the longtime home of a bison farm (but these, obviously, aren't bison).

Do you anything about this herd you'd like to share with other readers? Send an email to [email protected].

UPDATE: We had a few readers respond to the photo. Here is one which sums up what the photographer saw:

"This is not the bison fields this is the sunflower fields of Kent Family Farms.

The elk were part of an elk restoration project thru the SJI Hunters and Anglers.

Harold Cooper was the head of the program. In conjunction with maybe the MNR. It was maybe 20 years ago when they were released."

This story appeared on SooToday in 2010. Cowboys' collar elk in Algoma Country.
