Serious Squamish hit-and-run crash injures two, RCMP say

Two women are in hospital with serious injuries after a hit-and-run over the long weekend.

The crash happened on Sept. 3, at about 11:25 p.m., at Cleveland Avenue and Pemberton Avenue, according to an RCMP release sent out Sept. 6. 

The truck hit the two women after it had driven over a sidewalk, through a chain link fence, damaged a bus stop sign then flipped over. 

Both women suffered serious injuries. 

The driver ran away from the scene. 

A large number of nearby people saw the collision happen.

Bystanders came together to lift the truck off the injured women.

BC Ambulance Service then transferred the two women to hospital.

The women remain in hospital with life-altering injuries.

Police located and arrested the driver for a hit-and-run causing injury and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing injury.  

Local RCMP officers and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service continue the investigation.    

"This was a significant event and has had a large ripple effect in the community," said Cpl. Angela Kermer, Sea to Sky RCMP media relations officer, in the release. 

"We appeal to witnesses to contact police as our investigation continues. We also encourage people impacted to reach out to Victim Services at 604-892-6153 or email them at SQUAMISH_VICTIM_SERVICES@rcmp-grc.gc.ca for support as needed."
