Jordan Peet of Freestyle Whistler strikes Canada Winter Games gold

The freestyle skier distinguished herself from her competition in big air on Tuesday

Medal No. 3 of this year's Canada Winter Games goes to Jordan Peet, who propelled herself to big air gold on Feb. 21 at Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park in Brookvale, P.E.I.

Peet, a Freestyle Whistler athlete, found herself in third after the qualifying round, but saved her best for last with an 89.60-point performance in the second of her two jumps in the final. That vaulted her a full five points ahead of runner-up Evelyn Mullie from Calgary, Alta. (84.60). The bronze medal went to Ava Aubry of Collingwood, Ont. (78.20).

Top qualifer Naomi Urness from Mont-Tremblant, Que. was unable to equal her 93.20-point effort in the preliminary round, ending up fifth in the final (75.00). Zoe Greze-Kozuki, the other Freestyle Whistler skier in the field, placed sixth (73.20).

Meanwhile, Tate Garrod of Silver Star Freestyle was the top BC contender in the men's big air event. His 92.00 points left him just short of the podium in fourth. Jeremy Gagne (94.80) and Remi Asselin (92.80) won gold and silver respectively for Team Quebec, while Malcolm George Ferris of Brookfield, N.S. edged out Garrod for bronze (92.20).

The 2023 Canada Winter Games will continue until March 5, bringing together 3600 athletes, managers and coaches across 20 different sports for the largest multi-sport event in the country.
