As the 2019 camping season kicks off, there will be more spots up for grabs in and near Squamish.

The province announced on May 23 that nearly 600 new campsites will be added to BC Parks and recreation sites in B.C. A press release said the new sites are going where there is the most demand in the province.

At the Stawamus Chief Park, 35 new campsites will join the fray. In nearby Tantalus Park, 10 tent pads will be added for the 2019 season.

“People from all over the world come to our province to experience the spectacular natural beauty and enjoy a range of camping opportunities,” George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, said in a press release. “Camping is more popular than ever, which is why our government continues to increase the number of campsites and enhance visitor experience.”

These sites come two years after 52 new campsites opened near Squamish in 2017, and 431 across the province in 2018. The press release said the province expects more than a million campers this season.
