Keep your eyes on your ride, Squamish cyclists.
Given our bike-heavy culture in town, it is no surprise that bike thefts are a reality here too.
In 2019, Squamish RCMP investigated 50 bike thefts totalling about $54,200.
"We know full well how important people's bikes are to them in this town and we cannot stress enough that Squamish is a target-rich community for bike thieves," Cst. Ashley MacKay told The Chief.
Squamish isn't alone as a popular spot for bike thefts.
Pique Newsmagazinehas reported that between April and October 2019, the Whistler RCMP recorded approximately $85,000 in reported bike thefts. This included a single bike valued at more than $32,000.
"We encourage bike owners, of all ages, to register their bikes on Garage 529, to take those necessary precautions to ensure bikes are locked up and secure and to really just watch out for each other."
Garage 529 is a smartphone app/online bike registry that allows riders to register their two-wheeled vehicle for free.
