Applications are now open for B.C. youth who want to take charge in Victoria for a week in December.
Close to 100 youth will be invited to take a seat and debate current events impacting their communities during the 90th session of the BC Youth Parliament, running from Dec. 27 to 31.
Those between the ages of 16-21 who are interested in politics, community service and youth leadership are encouraged to apply.
The debates that take place over the week-long session will set a course for the British Columbia Youth Parliament in the year ahead.
Founded in 1924, the British Columbia Youth Parliament is a non-partisan youth service organization whose membership comes from all corners of the province.
Among the projects that will be discussed will be looking for ways to help youth become more involved in local community service and running six Regional Youth Parliament to promote parliamentary education for high school students.
“Joining BCYP is one of the best decisions I ever made,” stated Sheridan Hawse, premier of the 90th BC Youth Parliament.
“Youth Parliament has allowed me to engage in our democracy in a hands-on, educational environment. Despite this, BCYP is in no way a simulation or mock parliament. Our debates translate into real action in the communities across British Columbia that our members come from.”
Applications for those interested in attending the BC Youth Parliament session are due by Oct. 23 and can be found at bcyp.org.
