So far, about 55 water meters are measuring a combined 310 residential or commercial units.

The price tag for all this is about $852,000. More meters are expected.

During the update, staff addressed questions as to why single-family homes weren't being metered.

One reason was the cost, said Dave Marrow, director of major projects. Installing meters in houses would cost about $9.5 million while the return would be about $2 million to $3 million.

However, water metering of single-family homes may happen in the future, as all new houses are required to install meter boxes, which would allow for the easier installation of water meters in the future.

Coun. John French said some residents feel that those billed under the meter system are paying more and asked if that was true.

Chief financial officer Christine Mathews said only three multi-family properties are being metered. Residents in those properties are paying well below the standard flat rate, she said.
