Council has voted to support the Squamish Valley Rod and Gun Club’s bid to create a larger safety buffer for its ranges.

Local politicians unanimously voted in favour of writing a letter of support for the club on Mar. 19.

The club is trying to obtain a licence of occupation from the Ministry of Forests. This would expand the club’s territory, and thus allow for a greater buffer zone.

Currently, the club’s safety zones meet the chief firearms officer’s standards, but the organization would like to be extra safe, said club president Mike Morgan.

“It’s just a matter of now creating a larger area and having... a boundary to keep unknown people out,” said Morgan.

There’s no development intended to go on the land.

In determining the price of the licence, the province looks at whether the club is supported by the town and the Squamish Nation.

It’s hoped that getting support from both entities will help drive the price down.

Morgan said neighbouring properties were approached for feedback, but none of them responded.

He said the application started getting processed by the province a year ago. It’s in the final stages, as the land has been approved, but details are being worked out as to how it’ll be handed to the club.

Morgan told The Chief he was confident the club would be able to come up with the funds to get the land.

The province hasn’t yet proposed any prices, he said.

It’s unclear how long it’ll take for the club to secure the land, Morgan added.
