A Flood Watch has been issued for the Stawamus River and tributaries along the Sea to Sky Highway.

The River Forecast Centre warns that the river is rising and will approach, or could possibly exceed, the bank. Flooding of areas adjacent to the river may occur.

Rivers are running high, but have not reached alarming levels, according to the District of Squamish website, which adds that Squamish is experiencing localized minor pooling in some areas.

A High Streamflow Advisory, which is less serious than a Flood Watch, has been issued for the Squamish River. In this case, the river level is rising but no major flooding is expected, according to the River Forecast Centre. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

“Full crews are monitoring river levels and inspecting storm systems throughout the day and night, but be aware that flooding can occur, and often happens rapidly,” the District of Squamish’s website says. “Citizens should stay clear of trails close to the rivers and waterways as flooding in the tributary areas should be expected, and water levels can rise rapidly.”

The heaviest rainfall on the southern West Coast is expected to be in the Howe Sound area - including Squamish - the North Shore, Sunshine Coast and northern Fraser Valley.

A rainfall warning as been issued for the Howe Sound area, including Squamish.

Between 90 to 120 millimetres total rainfall is expected to hit Squamish by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, according to Environment Canada.

Environment Canada warns that heavy rain can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Slow down, watch for tail light and be prepared to stop. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
