Hungry Squamish residents need our help, now more than ever. That is the message from the Squamish Food Bank.

This past week the food bank saw a 30% increase in the number of people who needed food from the organization, according to the food bank's Linda Kelly-Smith.

"This increase in participation tells us that many people in our community are

suffering as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. After our last food distribution day, the cupboards were bare, bare as many you see in grocery stores. We had no peanut butter, no beans, no canned fruit and vegetables. We were in short supply of many other items," she said.

The food bank continues to operate thanks to locals donating either online or at their local grocery store. The donations totalled $5,000 in the past week, but they need more. In particular, they need peanut butter, canned veggies, and fruit as well as Size 5 and 6 diapers.

Here's how to help:

1. Make a cash donation through CanadaHelps.org. Search for Squamish Food Bank.

2. Purchase a gift card to donate to the food bank at any of the three grocery stores in

Squamish. If you are not going to the grocery stores right now you can call and arrange to purchase a gift card by telephone.

3. Drop off any non-perishable food or household items in the Food Bank bins at any of the local grocery stores.
