Keep calm, munchies on: VCH

Vancouver Coastal Health reminds people to take edibles in small doses

As cannabis edibles have become more widely available since Dec. 2019, the health authority has some advice before you dig in.

"We've seen for many years that it's easy for people, especially those who have less experience with cannabis, to consume more cannabis than they mean to with edibles," VCH Medical Health Officer Dr. Mark Lysyshyn said in a press release.

"Because the psychoactive effects of cannabis are a little different and take longer to kick in when digested, people often make the mistake of taking additional doses. But once the effects kick in, they can find themselves dealing with unpleasant sensations and feeling more impaired than they expected to be."

To prevent overindulging, VCH recommends small doses, starting with 2.5 to 5mg of THC for those new to the product.

Once you've chosen the amount, sit back and wait at least an hour for it to kick in.

"Dosage can make a big difference between getting the desired effects and feeling uncomfortable or anxious," VCH advises.

Using too much, the health authority says, or mixing with alcohol can cause extreme anxiety, vomiting and fainting. A full stomach can be helpful.

The bottom line is not to panic, stay hydrated, eat something — yes, munchies are recommended — and stay in a safe place until the effects wear off.

Another recommendation VCH shares is to make sure you store edibles away from similar-looking foods, so you don't accidentally take them when you — or someone else — didn't intend to.
