Mark your calendars Squamish: the municipal election is coming up fast, and the District has released dates and times for the nomination period, advanced voting and election day.

In total, Squamish will elect one mayor, six councillors, and two school trustees.

Voting will take place in municipalities across the province on Saturday, Oct. 20. In Squamish, eligible voters can place their ballot at Brennan Park from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Special election polls will be set up at Hilltop House and Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on voting day for employees, patients and residents.

Residents can also attend advance voting days on:

    Oct.10, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at The 55 Activity Centre

Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre

    Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The 55 Activity Centre

    Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The 55 Activity Centre

The District uses the provincial voters list for the local election, but new voters who meet the criteria can register on the Elections BC website at elections.bc.ca/register-to-vote.

If you forget to register, you can still vote, but will be required to show two pieces of identification or sign a solemn declaration confirming your residence.

Voters are required to be Canadian citizens, age 18 or older, who have lived in B.C. for six months and have lived in Squamish or owned local property for at least 30 days before registering.

Those planning on running in the election must declare during the 10-day nomination period that runs from 9 a.m. on September 4 to at 4 p.m. on Sept. 14.

“Accepting elected office is the highest order of public service and offers the opportunity to significantly influence the quality of life in your community. As such, it is not to be taken lightly,” said Robin Arthurs, chief election officer, in a letter for potential candidates.

“If, after serious consideration and consultation, you are willing to accept the challenge and demands of elected office, have your nomination form completed and filed during the nomination period,” she continues.

A candidate orientation will be held on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in council chambers.

After candidates have declared, the campaign period will start 28 days before the election. A lottery will decide the order of names on the ballot.
