It is a drive down the highway, but a new animal urgent care centre aims to offer pet patients access to around the clock medicine, diagnostics, surgery, medical treatment, and intensive care.

The hospital opened its doors Monday morning.

Previously, the Sea to Sky Corridor lacked a 24-hour emergency hospital for pets.

"The new 11,320 sq. foot facility is one of the largest modern, fully equipped animal hospitals in Western Canada," reads a news release announcing the facility's opening.

"Our vision for Mountainside Animal Hospital was shaped by my experiences as an emergency veterinarian over the last 17 years," said medical director and veterinarian Alastair Westcott.

In addition to emergency services, the facility offers surgery and diagnostics including life-support stations, three large surgical suites, separate cat and dog recovery wards, and an isolation ward for pets with a potentially contagious disease.

Mountainside Animal Hospital is located just off of Highway 1 on Capilano Road, in North Vancouver.
