A new director has been elected to the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District board. On Feb. 26, Sal Demare will be sworn in to his new position as Electoral Area A director.

A by-election was called after director John Courchesne resigned last fall. Electoral Area A is the most northwestern area of the SLRD.

The general voting date was Feb. 15.

Demare has been involved with the Bridge River Valley Community Association Trail Committee and was on other environmental and wildlife groups.

He also has experience with heritage projects.

Steven Oakley, the alternate director for Area A, temporarily filled the position in the interim. Oakley also ran in the election, and earned 89 votes. Demare won with a total of 118 votes.

"The Board looks forward to working with Mr. Demare in his new role as Electoral Area A director," Tony Rainbow, the SLRD board chair, said in a press release. "The Board wishes to thank Mr. Oakley for filling the role of director on an interim basis until the by-election could be held."

As the newly elected director, Demare will finish the 2018-2022 board term.
