Rescue crews continue to search for missing man swept into Squamish River on Sunday

Extensive search so far fails to turn up man in his 20s

Squamish RCMP and Squamish Search and Rescue continued their search Monday for a young man who was swept into the Squamish River early Sunday morning.

The man in his mid-20s from Kenya fell backwards two or three metres at about 1 a.m. Sunday night, according to police. The man and some friends had been camping up the Ashlu Forest Service Road, at about the 200 marker when he fell.

“Several witnesses nearby reported the male was swept into the fast running water and due to the darkness they lost sight of him,” reads a news release from Squamish RCMP.

The rescue organizations carried out extensive searches Sunday, to no avail. Squamish RCMP and Squamish Search and Rescue continue the search of the area and into Howe Sound by helicopter and boat.

The man is thought to be wearing a white t-shirt, grey sweatpants, and a black Adidas hoody.

"We are asking those in the area who see anything in the river or along the riverbanks to contact the RCMP immediately,” Cpl. Sasha Banks said in a news release.

Some of the man’s family have been notified, according to RCMP, but other relatives are still being contacted.

"Water can look tame, but it's relentless. It's powerful. We have logjams and other hazards on the river, people need to respect it and understand it, and be very careful around it. Especially this time of year when the river can be very aggressive because of the snow melt,” Mayor Patricia Heintzman told The Chief.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100 or contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, text 274637, or go to www.solvecrime.ca.
