Looks like rural Squamish has a little bit more prominence in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.

After serving the previous term as vice-chair, Tony Rainbow has been acclaimed as the new chair of the regional district board.

“I am honoured to be elected by my fellow board members to serve as board chair, and would like to thank my colleagues for their support,” Rainbow said in a news release.

“The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District is a diverse area and the board is made up of dedicated individuals who are committed to working collaboratively to achieve our objectives....I look forward to working with our returning directors as well as the new directors and leading the board as chair in the coming year.”

Rainbow is the director representing Electoral Area D, which includes rural Squamish, Furry Creek, Britannia Beach and Porteau Cove.

He reclaimed his seat on the SLRD by acclamation during the October municipal elections.

The outgoing chair, Jack Crompton, told The Chief last month that he likely wouldn’t be seeking another term helming the SLRD, as he’d have his hands full with his new role as mayor of Whistler.

However, that won’t be the last of Crompton, as he’ll still be serving  on the regional district board as a regular director.

Whistler, however, will still be on the Top 2.

Jen Ford, representing resort municipality, was acclaimed as vice-chair.

Ford joined the SLRD midway through the previous term after census numbers deemed that Whistler should receive another representative on account of population growth.

For Squamish, Mayor Karen Elliott has a new role on the SLRD as a regular director. Returning Coun. Doug Race will resume his duties in that same position.

The SLRD is governed by a 10-member board of directors composed of four electoral area directors and six municipal directors.

One director is from the District of Lillooet, one from the Village of Pemberton, two directors are from Whistler and two directors are from the District of Squamish.

Electoral area directors are elected by rural area voters during the municipal elections to serve a four-year term.

Municipal directors are first elected to their respective municipal council and then appointed by their council to serve on the regional district board.

The current SLRD Board of Directors are:

·         John Courchesne, Electoral Area A

·         Vivian Birch-Jones, Electoral Area B

·         Russell Mack, Electoral Area C

·         Tony Rainbow, Electoral Area D (Chair)

·         Jack Crompton, Resort Municipality of Whistler

·         Jen Ford, Resort Municipality of Whistler (Vice-Chair)
