RCMP say a skier has died, after having been buried in an avalanche in South Creek, near Pemberton, B.C. on Wednesday.

Friends of the victim told The Pique that the skier was Lisa Korthals, a longtime ski guide and realtor with Re/Max Sea to Sky who has lived in the Whistler and Pemberton area for over 25 years.

She leaves behind a husband and son.

Police say on 2:39 p.m. Wednesday, a local heli-skiing company told Whistler and Pemberton RCMP a skier had been buried in an avalanche.

The skier was located and rushed to Whistler Health Centre in critical condition.

“Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the skier was pronounced deceased just after 4:30 p.m.” wrote Sgt. Jolaine Percival in a news release.

Authorities are investigating the incident, and no further details are available until next of kin are notified.
