Wildlife concerns lead to removal of 10 oak trees behind skate park

Authorities worried about human-bear conflict along a route to nearby schools

To help stifle conflict with bears, the District of Squamish is removing 10 oak trees from a section of the Discovery Trail behind the skate park.

The area, which is close to Howe Sound Secondary, was closed last week due to a mother bear and her cubs feeding on the acorns.

“Bear attractant vegetation management is a priority initiative on DOS property, supported by the District’s Bear Conflict Management Plan,” the District said in a Facebook post.

“The District will be addressing attractants along designated Safe Routes to Schools in particular, and weighing a variety of considerations and trade-offs when deciding to remove or ‘manage’ a tree.”

Previously, conservation officers have been concerned about the number of bear conflicts in the area, the District said.

The trail is also designated as a safe route to school for the three schools nearby, and therefore is given top priority for management of attractants that might contribute to human-wildlife conflict, according to authorities.
