Heavy wind and rain caused the cancellation of 330 B.C. Ferries sailings last month, nearly four times the average.

B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall said bad weather on average causes the cancellation of 87 sailings during December. The majority of the cancellations were on routes between the northern Gulf Islands and Comox and Powell River, Marshall said.

The worst single day was Dec. 20, when more than half of the fleet was affected and $1 million in damage was caused to the terminal on Penelakut Island, out for 13 days.

With the terminal out, B.C. Ferries hired a water taxi to serve Penelakut, normally served with a triangular route linking up with Thetis Island and Chemainus.
