COLUMN: We need a whole food drive-thru in Squamish

I get why the District of Squamish doesn’t want anymore drive-thrus in town (see page A15). They can cause traffic congestion and aren’t necessarily good for a sense of community or to get people out walking instead of driving.

get why the District of Squamish doesn’t want anymore drive-thrus in town (see page A15).

They can cause traffic congestion and aren’t necessarily good for a sense of community or to get people out walking instead of driving.

But, as a mom of a toddler, I really enjoy drive-thus for my daily coffees or the occasional snack.

The last thing I want to do is drag my two-year-old daughter out of the car and wait in line while she struggles to run around the restaurant just so I can grab something to eat. It’s not like you can leave your child waiting in the car anymore!

I try not to eat out much but there are often times when I don’t get a chance to eat breakfast before work or I accidentally skip lunch on my way to an activity for my daughter on the weekend. Or, maybe, she’s napping the car and I want a quick snack while I take a minute to relax.

What I think a lot of parents would love is a drive-thru that serves healthy food and, of course, a good cup of piping-hot coffee. I’m talking about truly healthy food – sandwiches, wraps and salads made from scratch with nutritious, whole ingredients that I wouldn’t feel guilty eating. The kind of food I would like to make at home, but am often not organized enough to do so.

I’m not sure this sort of healthy drive-thru is realistic. It probably isn’t since I’ve never seen one in any community I’ve lived in, but wouldn’t it be nice?

On a recent Facebook thread, moms were discussing this and most agreed that this would be an excellent addition to the current drive-thrus.

I Googled “healthy drive-thru” and came across one in Pennsylvania called Farmer’s Road Drive Thru. An “alternative to the traditional fast-food establishment,” it serves all-natural, organic food, such as a veggie burger with granny smith apple cinnamon slaw, using 80 per cent local ingredients. Also on the menu is the Barnyard Egg with basil pesto, local cheese and roasted red pepper on a whole-wheat bun.

I think a drive-thru like this would suit Squamish well, but I know there are reasons why one hasn’t been opened, including space limitations and the price of land in town.

As my daughter gets older it will probably be easier to get her out of the car, but for now I would love to see something like Farmer’s Road Drive Thru come to Squamish.
