UPDATE: West Vancouver Police Dept. has now advised that FortisBC shut off the leak and access to the village is no longer restricted, Deborah Marshall, BC Ferries’ executive director of public affairs.

A gas leak in Horseshoe Bay mid-day Tuesday had BC Ferries asking customers to stay on terminal property.

The leak was at the corner of Royal Ave. and Bay St., so not on BC Ferries property, said Marshall.

“It's my understanding a contractor hit a line when they were doing some sort of work at Horseshoe Bay,” said Marshall.

“We're asking people to stay on our property, just to make sure they're distancing themselves from any potential incident,” said Marshall.

Marshall said she didn’t expect the leak to affect ferry travel. Bowen RCMP said that so far ferry travel to Bowen hasn’t been affected other than having foot passengers offload via the overhead ramp.

FortisBC has shut off the gas and is now doing testing of gas levels in the area, said Cst. Kevin Goodmurphy, communications officer for West Vancouver Police Department just before 1:30 p.m.

“If those readings look good…we will be reopening the area and allowing people back in,” said Goodmurphy. “We did do quite a significant evacuation two blocks in either direction of Royal and Bay St.”
