Letter: ‘Go back home’: Racist comments always hurt

I have contributed to Canada for nearly 40 years.

Dear Editor:

I have to get this off my chest. On Tuesday, March 9 at 12:40 p.m., I was walking on Hamilton Avenue just outside Capilano Mall in North Vancouver. An unmasked man in his 50s pushed me. All I said was “Please keep your distance.” He responded rudely, “Go back home, you [N-word].”

Please note I have contributed to Canada for nearly 40 years. Similar incidents have happened in the past, for both me and my wife, which makes me think: “one could be born in Canada but as long as we are coloured we will not be accepted as a Canadian by many.

When someone says “you are lucky you are not living south of the border,” [this] is like telling a battered woman ”you are lucky your husband beats you once a week, your neighbour’s husband beats her daily.” Racist comments, like battering, are bad and hurt even if not frequent.
