Dear Editor:

This week’s Saturday morning ride with my mountain biking buddy started like most others .... maybe a bit wetter and muddier than normal.

We were sheltered by the trees as we rode up Good Sir Martin and Baden Powell. But when we reached the clearing at the power lines, the skies opened up and we started getting drenched.

No problem, except that’s when I noticed that my rear tire was completely flat. And me without a spare tube.

That’s when we discovered just how friendly and generous the mountain biking community really is. Several guys offered to help but the tube was punctured so we couldn’t do much without a new one.

We were just about to start walking the long trek home (from the furthest spot on our route, mind you!) when a group of ladies came to our rescue. It turns out, they were part of the Muddbunnies mountain biking club.

One of them had a spare tube and a couple others took charge and replaced it for me. They couldn’t have been friendlier, more efficient/expert with the bike, nor did they seem to mind getting soaked. When I tried to get contact info so I could repay them for the tube, they said, “no, just pay it forward.” Kinda like a team of mountain biking superheroes!

So now I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll be fully equipped with a pump, spare tube and all the gear for future rides. I hope that someday I’ll be able to help someone else in need and make them realize what I learned this morning -- that North Shore mountain bikers look out for each other.

Thanks Muddbunnies!
