LETTER: Acknowledging International Volunteer Day in Squamish

I wanted to share that this Saturday, Dec.

I wanted to share that this Saturday, Dec. 5th is International Volunteer Day; and while this pandemic is asking us all to stay local, it is a great time to acknowledge all the amazing local initiatives undertaken or supported by volunteers and all the neighbourly random acts of kindness — the very essence of local, informal, volunteering.

We live in a wonderful community with amazing folks who contribute to our community in so many different and heartfelt ways.  Thank you local volunteers!!

And, if you are new to Squamish or new to volunteering, reflecting on this International Volunteer Day may also be a great opportunity to look around our community, to find ways to connect through volunteering (albeit socially distanced or virtual these days).  Volunteering offers opportunities to share a gift of time, learn new skills, meet new people and maybe like me, find a new career path.  I even understand that volunteering boosts longevity!

To learn more about our community clubs and organizations, have a look at The Squamish Chief’s “2020-21 Community Resource Directory” as it highlights all our amazing community organizations, many of which depend on volunteers to build their capacity for local programs, work or events.  Also, our new community recruiting tool volunteeerconnector.org is now online and another spot to find or post volunteer opportunities; search local, by postal code or nationally!

“International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a global celebration of volunteers. It takes place every year on Dec. 5 to shine a light on the impact of volunteer efforts everywhere. Volunteers are leading social change around the world. This special day promotes the work of volunteers at all levels, including local, national and international.

United Nations Volunteers founded International Volunteer Day in 1985.
