Thank you for your insightful editorial, “Understanding PTSD” (Nov. 15), and for your mention of the new Veteran Family Program.

Locally, medically released veterans and their families can access the program through the Mainland BC Military Family Resource Centre (veterans@bcmfrc.com). The Mainland BC MFRC is a local, not-for-profit organization that provides resources and services to help families meet the challenges associated with military life.

The editorial correctly pointed out that PTSD “not only affects veterans, but also police officers, firefighters and paramedics.” However, it should likewise be said that PTSD affects the families of these individuals: spouses, children and, in the case of our many young, single veterans, their parents.

The Veteran Family Program is designed to help medically released veterans and their families with the transition to post-service life. A program coordinator meets with families and helps them navigate the services, workshops and counselling available to them in order to find the best path forward.

We too are grateful for our veterans, and the families that support them.
